Dr Allom is an experienced Orthopaedic Surgeon with a subspecialist interest in surgery of the knee. He is a Fellow of both the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Dr Allom graduated from the University of London with a First Class Bachelor of Sciences degree with Honours and a double distinction in his medical degree, as well as numerous prizes. Dr Allom undertook Basic Surgical Training then Advanced Surgical Training in Orthopaedics in London, with the latter based at the prestigious Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals. Dr Allom has a Master’s Degree in Surgery and was awarded a Distinction for the thesis, which considered haemostasis during knee arthroplasty. Dr Allom has held Consultant posts at a general hospital in rural southwest England and King’s College Hospital, a major trauma centre in London.
During Orthopaedic Training, Dr Allom undertook a Trauma Fellowship at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney and fell in love with Australia and its people. Having spent some time as a consultant in the UK, he returned to Australia to raise his young family. Whilst working in Sydney to gain Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Dr Allom was mentored by internationally recognised experts at the forefront of soft tissue knee surgery and lower limb arthroplasty.
Dr Allom has long held an interest in research. His first peer-reviewed article, which discussed the construction and application of a probabilistic anatomical brain atlas, was published when he was an undergraduate. Dr Allom has an ongoing commitment to evidence-based practice, and he has continued to publish throughout his career. His research has spanned the breadth of orthopaedics, including anatomy and basic science; surgical technique; patient-reported outcome tools; soft tissue knee reconstruction and, most-recently, alternative alignment strategies and the application of robotics in total knee arthroplasty.
Dr Allom is invested in future generations of doctors and surgeons. He has been invited faculty at higher surgical training courses, and an OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) examiner for medical students at both the University of London and Western Sydney University. He mentors, teaches and examines orthopaedic surgical trainees.
